Ikona Narodenia Krista

Tradícia, že Kristus sa narodil v jaskyni, je doložená už v druhom storočí.

Na ikone Narodenia na hornej strane Kristus-dieťa zavinuté do plienok leží v jasliach a klaňajú sa mu anjeli a zvieratá.

Vôl a osol sú svedkami tejto udalosti, čím sa napĺňa proroctvo Izaiáša (1, 3) a Habakuka (3, 2).

Betlehemská hviezda je znázornená trojhrotovým  symbolom, ktorý sa v ikonografickej tradícii spája s Trojicou.

Mudrci sú v ranej ikonografii často znázorňovaní jeden so sivou bradou, druhý s čiernou a tretí hladko oholený.

Dvaja pastieri prichádzajúci sprava sa pozerajú na hviezdu a počúvajú anjela (Lk 2, 12).  

Jozef sedí a premýšľa o pôrode, lebo vie, že nie je otcom dieťaťa. V pobyzantskej tradícii je starý pastier, ktorý sa mu prihovára, diabol, ktorý ho pokúša, aby neveril v panenský pôrod.

Bohorodička leží na slamníku alebo na rolovateľnej posteli, pričom jej popôrodná únava poukazuje na skutočnosť narodenia Krista a vtelenia. Dve pôrodné asistentky, ktoré sa pripravujú Krista-dieťa na kúpanie, potvrdzujú jeho človečenstvo.  

V jasliach a plienkach je zámerný odkaz na Kristov hrob a hrobové rúcha.

Mnohé detaily sú prevzaté z prvých apokryfných textov, čo svedčí o dôležitosti nekánonických spisov vo vývoji východokresťanského ikonopisectva.
